we’re feeling 2022!
by Georgia Gibson
So as 2021 takes its final bow and we realise there’s no need for Netflix when each year seems to be filled with this many plot twists, we are ready to go into 2022 with main character energy only. A year that will bring a new Bond, a new Beyoncé album, a new Barbados, another chance for the boys to bring football home, and a whole lot more Bimbling. We are staying (and hoping we won’t be testing) positive.
Putting pandemics and politics aside, we think it’s about time we weigh up the year from a personal progress point of view, because that’s at least one thing we can control (or at least Gwyneth Paltrow tells us we can). So, let’s kick this off with some fresh, original and achievable New Year’s Resolutions:
- I will no longer spend £10 deliveroo-ing a £5.50 burrito when I’m hungover in bed because I find solidarity in its cylindrical greasy form (and I too would quite like to be wrapped in foil until the following day) (I will also refrain from overly participating in night befores so as to become someone who brunches out with avocados on morning afters)
- I will listen to more adventurous music… (because I’ve learnt you can’t hide from Spotify Wrapped and the subsequent screenshot shares)
- I will no longer tell my friends I’m five minutes away when really I am still deciding which of my black jeans to wear. Oh and I will not buy any more fast fashion (less clothes=less deciding time, these will be mutually beneficial).
- I will stop counting the subtitles of Squid Game as my bed-time reading.
- I will start a dream diary, I will run every morning, I will ring my grandparents every week, I will learn to speak Spanish, to cook, to do the splits, to play the guitar, to get organised, to keep my spaces tidy, to live in the moment, and pretty much absolutely smash this whole year, so by the time I get to 2023, I am a different person entirely and there will be no need for a resolution ever again.
We hear you, and we salute you.
In the knowledge that this all sounds as likely as a turkey at Christmas…at the Thunberg’s house. And we rather expect it to become a to-do list for the first week of January that we’ll be reunited with next year: same time, same place.
What did the year really teach us? Well, the UK’s 2021 was born in lockdown, controlled and claustrophobic, and immediately separated from its European relatives. In adolescence and as the sun came out, 2021 tasted freedom and rebelled against all former restraints, perhaps at times taking it too far just because it could. But as novelty wore off and autumn and winter rumbled in, 2021 had to learn to take itself seriously again, no longer reduced by restrictions but forever changed by them. Older, wiser and aware that it isn’t history until it repeats itself, 2021 felt ready to pass on the baton (hence the accelerated last 50m sprint). So, all in all, what’s the moral here- Don’t be an overprotective parent? Don’t leave the EU? Wear a mask?
Or, 2021 taught us balance. It taught us it’s okay to breathe, that spending time outside with the people you love remedies most things, that we should be careful and compassionate, and that turns out we do mostly put on nice clothes for other people. It taught us that we like to be able to bimble around as much as we want and that sometimes we need to get out our houses to get out our heads. It taught us we even quite like the commute (or at least the coffee that was part of it). It taught us to big up small businesses in our local areas, and that there are countless corners of our own countries which are well worth exploring. It taught us that big global changes can have small personal consequences, but that small personal changes can have big global consequences.
So, if you must have a New Year’s Resolution this year, why not make it: to see things with high resolution. See the pixels that make up the picture, stuff yourself with smiles, smell a flower when you’re next outside, sip slowly and savour — real sustainable success is the sum of small things.
We at Bimble are here when you want to store those little moments and memories, or seek out new ones. We want you to be able to collect those pub gardens where you sat for hours (after proudly booking your table), or that rooftop bar where you went for your first hinge date. Or that time you discovered the Hindu temple in Neasden, or the Lavender field in Banstead, or that book shop in Camden, or those café’s from which you zoomed and sometimes still do, and we want you to daydream and draw up wish lists for spots (off the red list), or simply flick and click through others’ recommendations and travel diaries.
So that as soon as we are all dismissed from Omicron’s head office, we don’t want you to have to waste any time picking plans or places. Bimble is the app to reduce screen time. To help you save and spend your free time. To make the most of me-time or to give you ideas in the meantime. But when you are there, make sure it is just: be-time.
Happy New Year from all of us at Bimble!
